Five Questions You Should Never Ask During an LPN Interview

When you are faced with an LPN job interview, it is always a good idea to ask a few questions. By asking two or three questions pertaining to the position and its daily responsibilities, you will be showing your potential boss that you are truly interested in the job. However, there are a few questions that you should never ask during an interview.

  1. Will it be okay for me to leave early on occasion? - While employers understand that maintaining a balance between work and life is important to many of their staff members, not all employers are able to offer flexible work schedules. Before applying to any job, it is important to do a bit of research and find out about the required work schedule. If you think you will be unable to meet the demands of the job in question, it is best to keep searching.
  2. Do you give regular pay raises, and if you do, when do you give them? - You would not be human if you were not concerned with income, but it is never wise to ask about income during an initial job interview. For one thing, asking questions such as these makes it sound as if you are assuming that you already have the position. Furthermore, how can an employer even know if you would be eligible for any future raises before you have done any work to prove your worthiness?
  3. How soon after I get hired can I be promoted? - This question goes hand-in-hand with question number two. You should never assume that you have the job in the bag just because you were called for an initial interview. And even if employers offer in-house job promotions, they cannot possibly be sure that you would be worthy after just one meeting with you! To qualify for an in-house promotion, you must prove you are worthy, and that often takes time.
  4. If, after I am hired, I find that I do not like the position, can I transfer to another position? - Asking this question during an LPN interview is a sure-fire way to bomb your interview. You need to research before applying for a job and find out what the job entails. If you do not like any job description, you should not consider the job. Most employers cannot ensure that there will be another position available to you if you do not like the one you are hired for.
  5. Will you be doing a full criminal background check? - Finally, you should never ask your interviewers whether or not they conduct full criminal background checks. First of all, criminal background checks are required for employment with most all medical careers today. Secondly, when you ask such a question, your potential employer may think that you are worried that he or she will find something bad on your record.
